Castellar de la Frontera

Erected over a rocky promontory with is magnificent castel that domains all the Bay and the Gibraltar Crag, Castellar is the green lung of the region benefiting itself from the Alcornocales (cork oak) Natural Park.

Its origins goes back to the Bronze Age (Del Cancho Caves deposits, del Tajo and Arbejera) but when it acquires its own identity is with the Muslim conquest, changing the name to Al-Qars. When talking about the city it must be distinguished between the new and old Castellar, built in 1971 8 Km away from the old one.

In the old town its fortress is located (centuries XII-XV), in perfect conservation state although reformed. Inside the castle is one of the few examples that exists of inhabited core in the interior of a fortification. Maintains a strong medieval character, with its winding of clean and whitewashed streets. Here is the Divine Savior Church and, next to it there’s a passage called algorfa that unites it with the Alcazar.

 

Another construction of Muslim origin is the Almoraima Tower, located over a hill. Served also of almenara tower as mean of news transmission. Castellar “The New” is a totally modern town, with wide streets and squares. Here’s the Divine Savior Church that host the image of the Holy Christ of Almoraima, truly venerated by numerous believers.

In the Andalucia Square it’s also an important sculpture which celebrates the XXV Anniversary of the creation of the new town and really close another sculpture dedicated to the Human Rights.

Another great attractive of the place is its cuisine, always impaired to hunting meats, specially deer, as well as rabbit and partridge. Cut into leg, chops, steaks or tenderloin, the deer meat is tender and to soften it, usually it’s seasoned with wine and aromatic herbs in stews.

The Almoraima.

Is, alongside the old Castellar and the New Town of Castellar, the third population core of the municipality. In 1603 the mercenary order built the St Miguel of Almoraima convent. The friars remains there until mid of the XVII century, changing to the hands of the Medinaceli Duke, who converted it into a recreation and hunting farm. In 1945 the Almoraima Cork Company is created, around of which the houses that gave place to the neighborhood of Almoraima were built.
